Active Ingredient
Description
Acnewar® Gel is manufactured by Akumentis Healthcare Ltd. Acnewar® Gel contains Dapsone as an active ingredient. Dapsone (also known as diaminodiphenyl sulfone or DDS) is a sulfone that possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is indicated for long- and short-term treatment of acne vulgaris.
Acne vulgaris is a very common chronic skin disease characterized by high production of skin sebum, clogged pores, numerous inflammations such as pimples, whiteheads, cysts, and pus-filled lesions alongside with non-inflamed comedones. This disease most frequently affects face, neck, chest, and back and may cause lifelong scarring of inflammations.
Acne is associated with anomalous growth of P. acnes bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) due to genetics and increase in androgen hormones, although these bacteria are usually harmless existing on the skin. The immune response to P. acnes bacteria growth causes inflammation and acne progression.
MOA (mechanism of action)
Dapsone is a sulfone antibiotic with bacteriostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. It ruins Propionibacterium acnes bacteria inhibiting the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid in it. Dapsone also inhibits lysosomal enzymes as well as multiple prostaglandins and leukotrienes, thereby blocking their inflammatory effects.
